SPIELSALON 2011 from 13.-17. July
An octopus, which has to be as human as possible, an extremely unfair pong game, with love and hate * – the playing principles in computer games are sometimes quite unusual. The SPIELSALON is about authoring games, game makers, gamers.
For about two years, there has been a growing interest among students of the animation class for computer games. Within the scope of workshops, cooperations and in free artistic work, several – partially award-winning – computer games were created.
The SPIELSALON now takes on the interest of the animation film students and provides space for a fruitful exchange between professional game developers, students, artists and the audience. It reflects the new artistic development of the computer games on a theoretical and practical level. In a five-day exhibition at the Kassel Kunstverein in the Fridericianum, current German and international computer games will be presented with a strong artistic handwriting and an individual view of the world. In addition, there are lectures and a panel discussion of international game developers and experts.
The animation class under the direction of Prof. Thomas Meyer-Hermann and Prof. Martina Bramkamp will organize the SPIELSALON for the first time this year.

Tiny & Big is the winner of the DEUTSCHE COMPUTERSPIELPREIS
Big win with the play developers of Blackpants: Their game Tiny & Big has won the German computer game prize in the category “Best new concept from student competition”. The € 35,000 prize is not the first award that the Kassel team wins with the game.
Black Pants are a group of students and former students of the trick film class as well as informatics graduates of the Ing.-Schule Kassel, who gathered together about two years ago in order to jointly develop a computer game. The computer scientists had written a 3d-game engine and were working with animators to develop a 3d adventure game. The cooperation was fruitful: last year, a first demo of Tiny & Big has appeared and has caused a stir in the world of independent game makers and players. Just a few days ago, Black Pants traveled to the San Francisco Independent Games Festival in the USA to receive their award in the student competition. Then they won the Unity Award in Austin (Texas) as part of the SXSW festival.
On the last Wednesday evening, Blackpants in Munich were awarded the German Computer Game Prize as part of a festive gala. With radiant faces, Christian Niemand and Sebastian Stamm, the group’s representative, accepted the prize for the best concept in the competition for newcomers. The associated cash prize of € 35,000 enables the Group to continue to remain independent and to work on the development of Tiny & Big. In the fall, a new version will appear, with new features and several levels.
Congratulations!

27. February, 5pm Finissage of the exhibition undoubtedly/unzweifelhaft“
The Kassel Kunstverein invites you to the vernissage of its exhibition “undoubtedly / undoubtedly” – Slawomir Elsner / Martin Werthmann. It begins with a brief tour of the curator Bernhard Balkenhol. Afterwards Dr. Barbara Scheuermann, Berlin, will lead an artist talk with Martin Werthmann.

Two Kasseler films in WIESBADEN
The best animation films of the year from all over the world – from Argentina to the Republic of China – will be shown at the 12th International Trickfilm Weekend in Wiesbaden from 14 to 17 October 2010. In two different categories of competition are also films of the Trickfilmklasse.
Urte Zintler has qualified for the competition category “Young Animation I” with her already widely acclaimed animation “Die Gedanken sind frei” and can now hope for the audience prize. The film is her final film at the Kunsthochschule Kassel and is about the attempts of a woman to remember the verses of the famous folk song “Die Gedanken sind frei”. While she is humming and singing with a broken voice, streak-like memories of her life come before her eyes – perhaps beautiful, perhaps tragic moments.
Wu Kung, a student of the animation class Kassel, is represented in the competition category “Young Animation II” with her film “Die Wahrheits-Quizshow”. The film is about the sudden and surprising illness of the outstanding sportswoman LanLan. The popular show of the state television station is in search of the truth, using its own methods. “Die Wahrheits-Quizshow” has also been shown at numerous festivals, most recently at the “KROK” festival in Ukraine and Russia.
